Stains

Stains are used to change the color of the wood. Here are some of the more common stains requested.

 

Common finishes

Finishes are used to protect the wood and stain

Polyurethane
  • Hard and durable
  • Water resistant
  • Alcohol resistant
  • Not repairable - damage to the finish results in complete strip and refinish
  • Tends to yellow (amber) and continues to yellow with age
  • Satin
  • Semi-gloss
  • Gloss
Lacquer
  • Hard and durable
  • Repairable - damage can be "Touched up" rather easily
  • Water and alcohol resistant if applied over a vinyl sealer coat
  • Not as water and alcohol resistant as urethane
  • Slight amber effect with age
  • DRE - Dull Rubbed Effect
  • MRE - Medium Rubbed Effect
  • BRE - Bright Rubbed Effect
  • Gloss
Shellac
  • Hard classic finish
  • Very easy to repair damage
  • Easily damaged by water or alcohol
  • Becomes fragile with age
  • Sheen is achieved by hand rubbing to desired finish
